Glenelg SA 5045
(Pop 4 000)
Glenelg is a popular Adelaide
seaside suburb/holiday resort 11 km s-w of the
CBD. Founded in 1836, it is SA mainland's
oldest European settlement named after Lord
Glenelg, a British politician of the time. Original
inhabitants were the Kaurna Aborigines who
named the local river 'Pattawilyangga'. The
Patawalonga River has since been dammed and has
thereby created an artificial boat harbour. The
area has many cafes, restaurants, hotels &
tourist attractions. Adelaide's last remaining tram
service runs from Glenelg to the city centre
(c.1929) on weekends/holidays. Weekday services are
run by modern trams.
